11处特工皇妃 (11 Chù Tègōng Huáng Fēi) – by 潇湘冬儿 (Xiāoxiāng Dōng er)

11处特工皇妃bookcover

Summary:

Before she was framed and thrown into prison, Chu Qiao (楚乔) was a special agent of unit 11. After she escaped, she sacrificed herself to save the unit. She was then reborn into the body of a 8 year old slave who had just died after being thrown into a pit to be a human shooting target. Chu Qiao managed to survive from a second death with the help of Yan Bei’s hostage,Yan Xun (燕洵), who was a “guest” to the royal family to ensure the loyalty of Yan Bei’s lord. This favor was returned, when the Yan Xun’s father was executed. Since then, she was bound to him and spent years locked in the palace as his maid, teacher, ally, and friend as she helped him gain power to rebel, which was something Chu Qiao’s original owner, Zhuge Yue (诸葛玥) was not so happy about.

Zhuge Yue, a son from one of the most powerful families in Xia (the country Chu Qiao was reborn in). He was the cruel owner who didn’t care for her or the lives of the slaves he threw into a pit to entertain other powerful guests. Yet, he did started to care for her, and even promoted her to be his most important servant. His feelings for her didn’t diminish when she betrayed him, or when she spent years by Yan Xun’s side, or when she was part of the rebellion.

There is a Fan made MV that is actually really well made here.

Mini-Review:

Ah~ Where do I begin with this series? Some of you might have already figured out just how much I love this series because I NAMED THIS BLOG AFTER IT. Is it my favorite?…Hmmm, I can’t really be sure. Since this book, I’ve read many others that I loved and always re-read, but this one is special. It was this book that really got me addicted to Chinese web novels. After this one, I had to find more to fill that hole it left me. I tried to find other time-traveling-special-service-agents (jeeze, that’s a mouthful), and while I did managed to find a few more golden eggs, none of them could really take this one’s place. The many emotions I went through, keeps making me think about this novel. 11 Chù Tègōng Huáng Fēi is a must read. It has a beautiful romance (*cough* and beautiful men *cough*), heart-wrenching betrayals, the occasional comedy, and writing full of raw emotions. The emotions it made me go through not only makes me incapable of re-reading it, but also would never let me forget it. I know there are many out there that hates the time-traveling genre (…which I love >_<), but really, give this book a try.

Rating:

Characters: 4/5

The characters, besides Chu Qiao who was really twenty-seven, in the beginning of the book all started at a young age. Thus, there was a lot of developing they could and did went through. I can’t mention much without spoiling things, but lets just say, the changes were done well and naturally. The way the characters turn out the way they did made sense to me.

Chu Qiao was the only one that didn’t seem to change much. In the beginning she had a sense of justice but was not above using deadly means to get what she wants. However, she still had a strong sense of a moral code and was really actually a pretty nice person. This made others want to follow her as well as creates conflicts with her and those around her. It was also what bounded her with Yan Xun and conflicted feelings she felt about Zhuge Yue.

Close to the ending, I get the sense that she was just tired. Though she will be more than willing to pick up the sword and fight for her people, Chu Qiao really just wanted a peaceful life and the freedom to do what she wanted. Don’t get me wrong, Chu Qiao doesn’t want to just be a wife waiting for her husband, but a partner to stand side by side with that person. It’s just that, she would prefer  that both her and her family wouldn’t have to be put in thrilling, but dangerous situations.

I will say the main reason Chu Qiao did not change much is because she already went through a whole bunch of tabulations. Maybe I’m making excuses, but I never felt exasperated (some of the cheesy speeches made me roll my eyes now and then) with her as I did with other time-traveling heroines. She didn’t feel like the Mary Sue character the time-traveling genre tends to have. I also felt that Chu Qiao didn’t need to change much. She was never being unreasonable or un-relatable. The changes that did happen were very small, but made sense for someone of her age and experience. Chu Qiao was a special service agent who was a loyal, strong, cunning military leader, and at times ruthless assassin. In her new life, she was doing those very same things. So, if she were to change, I would actually be more confused.

Story: 4.5/5

The story kept me interested from the beginning to the end. I wanted to know what would happen. Who Chu Qiao would end up with was one of them, but there were many other scenes that kept me on the edge of the seat, excited or worried for what was to come. I would say more, but I don’t want to spoil anything.

Writing: 3.5/5

The writing wasn’t perfect. I wanted to laugh at some cheesy or over the top parts. However, it was also the writing that held my heart and squeezed it throughout the novel. The author really knows how to make you feel for both the minor and major characters. When I did a quick search of her, I noticed this book was a series, the other two are about her two friends. Those two had much more obvious writing flaws, so I could tell that this book was an improvement of the two.

Personal Enjoyment: 5/5 (I would put more, but…)

Overall: 17/20    ||    Read: 1 time

e-book: Chinese(There some comments between the main story and extras)/English || Audiobook: One Reader

Please or please do not continue reading unless you actually finished the book. I usually don’t mind people reading spoilers, but for this one, it will really lessen the experience if you know what will happen! If you must know whether or not the ending is happy, sad, or open ended, it will be mentioned before the rant. Go ahead and read it, but please stop before the rant.

Ending:

Happy or Mixed ending

Frankly, I never had such a hard time deciding between the two. Chu Qiao was happy and married the man she loves (the one I shipped), but the path to that ending was very difficult and heartbreaking. The ending couldn’t get rid of the heavy bitter-sweet feels I had (and still have) after reading the last few words — even if those last words were filled with happiness.

Spoiler-filled Rant:

Yan Xun

Uggghhh, Yan Xun why, whyyyyy, whyyyyyyyy must you turn to the dark side! Okay, I know and understand (though I don’t approve of the reasons) the reasoning behind his actions, but boy did he made me both mad and upset for him. Chu Qiao was with him when he had nothing, when he could have died at any moment, yet he never completely trusted her. He doubted her, when he should have known that she of all people would never betray him. But noooooo, he must push her further and further away until she finally couldn’t take it anymore, and left him. That’s right, folks-who-didn’t-read-the-book-and-ignored-my-warning, Chu Qiao doesn’t end up with him. There was a foreboding foreshadowing near the beginning of novel that hinted that they were not going to end up together. I tried to ignore it, because I originally shipped them, but in the end, the warning came true.

He is one of the major reasons I left this book with heavy feelings, despite loving the guy she ends up with, Zhuge Yue. I could never really hate him, I’m just frustrated with him, as well as pity him. The pity comes from the fact that Chu Qiao could have really ended up with him. She accepted quite a few of his horrendous actions (a bit too quickly in fact, which made me sometimes believe, she was partly responsible for how he turned out the way he did), but he never stopped stabbing at the faith she had for him. The very moment he decided to use her to get to Zhuge Yue, was the final straw for her and me. I had already gave up on the ship the moment he left his people to die at Yan Bei to fight Xia. That action should be more impactful, and don’t get me wrong, it was, but for some reason, it didn’t hurt me or Chu Qiao as much as the moment he used Chu Qiao as bait. Maybe it’s because he eventually came back when he received the news that Chu Qiao refuse to leave and let Yan Bei fall. Or maybe it’s because all his actions added up together led to this one being unacceptable.

Despite jumping ships, the author never stopped twisting the dagger she placed in my heart. It was so much more painful knowing how happy they could have been together if he had trusted her and listened to her reasonable pleas. In the end, he not only got back his fiefdom, he also managed to make his own country (I think he got some of it or all of the land from Xia, the facts are a bit fuzzy), but he was never truly happy. Before she (the concubine) found out, fought and destroyed her face, Yan Xun made a maid at his palace his favorite concubine, despite everyone being against it, all because she resembled Chu Qiao. Yan Xun might not have thought he was unhappy, but towards the end, he met Chu Qiao again after many years. When he turned his back to her and walked away, her name was being repeated in his mind over and over. He comforted himself, saying that she was just another woman, which can’t be compared to an entire kingdom. However the pain was there. Yan Xun lost the girl.

I suppose it’s one of those “the beauty or the kingdom” questions, and though normally I would totally be understanding to those choosing the kingdom (I mean think about all those lives that would be endangered if they gave up) and really hate it when the girl is conflicted with it, but Zhuge Yue really changed me around on that topic. He was faced with that same conflict, and when Chu Qiao asked him why he came back to save her, Zhuge Yue replied with a simple answer (paraphrasing here):

“A country, I can go back to conquer it again later, but once you are gone, I will never be able to get you back”

And this is why I love Zhuge Yue so much. He would never leave his people to die like Yan Xun did. He never stopped loving and caring for Chu Qiao. He gave her his trust, heart, protection, and freedom. Yes, he was a cruel bastard in the beginning, but he changed — he grew up into a better person and leader.

However, despite being firmly on the Zhuge Yue ship, Yan Xun will always leave me with a heavy heart. He was all alone in the end. So I really can’t stop pitying him. It doesn’t help that he could have met someone else. The queen he had, was someone he didn’t like and even hated, but we the readers knew that she was the best-friend and ally Yan Xun kept writing letters to. However, because she used another person’s name, and was indirectly involved with that person’s death, Yan Xun believed she caused his best-friend’s death. She was a strong and amazing ruler, but also just as lonely as Yan Xun, and just as deeply in loved with Yan Xun as he was to Chu Qiao. Frankly, she was wasted on him, and in the end, she died, and Yan Xun never found out his best-friend was by his side.

I don’t believe this bitter-sweet book would be less bitter if Chu Qiao stayed with Yan Xun, because I really like Zhuge Yue. There were other guys vying for Chu Qiao, and my heart ached for them too. Even though they never really hurt Chu Qiao, none of them made me feel as upset as Yan Xun did.

  1. Seeing that u r such a super fan of this novel, would you like to translate the synopsis into English so that I can post it in SSB? I’ll provide a link to your blog so that you can discuss with like-minded readers either in SSB or in your blog.

    1. Heyyyy, thanks for reading this post and your suggestion. I’m sorry for being so late, but here is a rough translation of the synopsis I found on Baike. I changed a few things because there were spoilers in the original version:

” In the Huang Jin Empire, there lived a girl who was a time-traveling, special agent and a group of young, but ambitious boys. They all started from their home country and went about to conquer the world.

Chu Qiao was once agent 005 for the the military unit 11. After being framed and thrown into prison, she successfully escaped but then sacrificed her life to protect the special agent unit from being bombed. When she woke up again, Chu Qiao had traveled to the Xia Dynasty as an 8-year-old slave girl. Due to receiving help from Yan Xun during their escape, their fates were bound together as Chu Qiao would then spend years helping him rebel and reconquer his land.

However, as they walked further and further down the path to their dream, they grew further apart. Maybe it was because of the way they dealt with things, or maybe because of some rather meddlesome men: one who never stopped loving Chu Qiao, despite having their loyalties lie on opposite ends, and the frivolous prince that supported her from the side.

The old regime will crumble and wither away, letting the new Xia Dynasty to be reborn from the ashes.

(*I do not believe the Xia Dynasty here is the historical Xia Dynasty, but I could be wrong.) “

  4. So YX tried to get ZGY with CQ as a bait but CQ refused or she didn’t realize at first but YX’s plan failed? I watch only the drama n from the drama I got a feeling that CQ will develop special feeling/bond with ZGY that will prevent her from harming ZGY in whatever situation.

    So under ZGY’s hand she become a top spy/assassin/soldier/personal cleaner/bed warmer/concubine/wife at the end….what a lucky man!!😱😱

    1. CQ found out in the middle of the plan, causing ZGY to get severally injured. So YX kinda failed but also didn’t. In the novel, it took CQ a long time to forgive and be with ZGY, because he kinda caused the death of her body’s brother.

      1. The show’s title is called Princess Agent. There’s mix reaction about this drama and I think for people who read the novel won’t be able to enjoy the show as much as the novel. But it’s common to feel this way for most drama or movie adaptation from novels. My advice would be watch it with a chunk of salt. Some people complaint about the characterization, the directing, the lighting and most of all the slow pace of the show. I myself love the drama and I couldn’t care less about the technicality stuff, but I must say I agree with the slow pace.
For 58 episodes and only half the story (until Ice Lake Arc, I wouldn’t know since I didn’t read the novel, blame my so basic and mediocre mandarin.) That’s what people said.. Not sure if it’s true or not. And I don’t know if there is going to be a sequel or not, with the same cast or not. So you’ve been warned.. In my case, if you`re gonna get wet, might as well go swimming.

Thank you for your review of the novel. Been searching for one and I found your website. Much appreciated.

      2. @11thagent, one obvious difference between the book and the drama is Zhuge Yue’s name. He is known as Yuwen Yue in the drama. The other 2 names – Chu Qiao and Yan Xu remain the same.

  6. Thank you for your review. Does Chu Qiao have an affair with both Zhuge Yue and Yan Xun? I’m a bit confused, since in the beginning she was Zhuge Yue slave and then she was with Yan Xun?

    Like

    1. No, she ran away from Zhuge Yue, and during that process, ran into Yan Xun, who helped her (he too was running away). Both of them were caught and locked in a secluded part of the palace, so she kinda was forcefully with him. They grew up together, and were there for each other during that time. So, it’s natural they bonded.

  7. @11th agent
I am not good at Chinese and was searching desperately for English articles on the drama Princess Agents, So I am so happy to find this blog. Thank you.

But where can I read the English version of the book? I tried listening to the Chinese audiobook link you give. But the Chinese is beyond me.

I totally love the actors Lin Gen Xing and Zhao Li Ying for the way they portray their characters. It makes me feel so much for the misunderstanding that gets in the way of their love. This show has made me a fan of both of them and I am seeing them act for the first time.

快穿之炮灰女配逆袭记: The early missions are so-so, but eventually they become more and more interesting. I really like how the main character is so strong (mentally), so far there isn’t any romance, something that I really like. Uncompleted.

  9. Hi! May I ask the nature of CQ and YX’s relationship while being imprisoned? Did they have husband-wife type of relationship or master-slave one? Can you give an example of a lovey dovey scene between ZGY and CQ? Thanks a lot!

    Like

    1. CQ and YX relationship was pretty innocent, there was a bit of a superior-subordinate feel, but it was closer to friends->lovers. Though they had feelings for each other, and CQ was technically YX servant (which meant he could sleep with her), YX wanted to make CQ his wife before touching her. That kind of move was pretty noble for a guy at that time, since a woman’s virginity was so important, and wanting to give her a title before taking that away from her was probably one of the few decent things he did in the book. He did sleep with other woman that were sent to him, though that was mainly for deceiving their enemies (even so, I still felt icky about it). CQ would be unhappy, but understood why. It was only until a bit later where it was hinted that YX might have slept with a woman who followed after the army (a minor character, but historically there were women in the army who’s purpose is to “comfort” the soldiers), but it was never bluntly stated. YX, however, never took any concubines or a wife while CQ was with him, and only did when there was really no hope between the two anymore.

ZGY didn’t take much time to bed CQ once they were officially together, and was pretty shocked when he found out CQ was still a virgin. Guess he never thought much of YX’s character, lol. Unlike YX, who wanted CQ to be more of a housewife (albeit, a royal housewife), ZGY wanted to give her freedom and peace to do what she wants. He let her go several times when CQ was still with YX. ZGY tried to be a better man for her, and their relationship, after they grew up had absolutely no superior-subordinate vibe, they were equals.

        1. I listened to the audiobook, so I don’t know the total number of chapters. Yes, the book is complete. Frankly, it’s not the longest in comparison to many Chinese novels today, but it’s still a hefty amount. It’s also condensed with events and emotions.

      1. Thanks. I listened to the Chinese audiobook you have online but I am still confused on several things since my Chinese is not all that great. How did ZGY’s grandpa hurt his legs? And what is the story behind ZGY’s mother? ZGY and CQ are of different social classes and yet they are able to married?
        Thank you so much.

        Like

        1. So, I don’t remember about the leg or mother thing, but the last one I know. There are several reasons no one was against it (even if they didn’t approve). By the time the two got married, CQ was no longer a maid. Two, CQ in several situations displayed good military skills, as she won several battles and had loyal soldiers. She pretty much had a private army. Three, ZGY, by that time, was a lord of his own land. He was really powerful, so he didn’t need to be like other emperors/kings who had to marry powerful women to keep their power. Basically, as long as you are powerful, and both sides want to, no one can stop you. CQ and ZGY had power and feelings for each other, even if people looked down at CQ for her background (and that she was obviously pregnant during the wedding), no one could stop it from happening.

  12. OH MY GOD!!!! I just realized now that in the drama the role of Xiao Yu’s pen-pal was switched between Yue and Yan Xun. This is why I was so confused with this part of your SPOILER :

“The queen he had, was someone he didn’t like and even hated, but we the readers knew that she was the best-friend and ally Yan Xun kept writing letters to. ”

Now the drama is finished. I really hope there will be a second season with the same casts of course. But I’m not sure it’d happen anytime soon. And if there’s a second season with different casts, I don’t think I’ll be watching it.

      1. I know.. That was such a random thing to change, but maybe because in the drama Xiao Yu was Da Liang’s top spy so it can be related to Yue’s Eyes of God. Perhaps it’s a spy vs spy kind of thing. In the drama Xiao Yu did like Yue after she knows who her pen-pal really is but knowing they’re enemies, she put aside her feeling.
Maybe knowing this, I don’t think they want a 2nd season initially. Because how are they going to implement the plot where Yan Xun having his own kingdom without his pen-pal’s help.
But because the ratings were exceeding their expectation, that’s why there’s rumor regarding Angela Baby and 2nd season.

        1. Still so weird. I liked Yan Xun’s queen in the book, because of how strong and tragic her story was. Her story really showed off the author’s writing skills. Nothing was blatantly stated, it was cleverly hinted, really giving a good example of the “show don’t tell” rule. I still remember the scene where Yan Xun passed by the maids who where burning the queen’s stuff (she passed away). The things they were burning were the proof that Yan Xun’s pen pal was her. Part of that document flew past Yan Xun, and into a tree. By the time he looked up, the whole thing was burned and turned to ash. Every last proof of who she was in Yan Xun’s life disappeared. The only one who kind of guessed what happened was the wife of the guy whose identity was used by the queen to communicate with Yan Xun. But she would never tell Yan Xun, because her status, and the future of her son (who Yan Xun treated as if he was his own) was all based on the misunderstanding that her husband was Yan Xun’s best friend.

      2. In the drama it was Xiao Yu who revealed to Yuwen Yu who Xinger really is, her real identity and back ground, I think it made Yuwen Yu love CQ more at the same time fear Xinger’s capability too knowing she is now the owner of Wind and Cloud decree, it could be the reason why he asked Xinger in the drama if she will chop his head when they meet in the battle field. Xinger said “I will never do that but will try her best to defeat him” Yuwen Yu said I can’t do that… I guess because she love CQ. Also in the drama Yuwen Yu’s reply when he was asked by Xiao Yu on why he still value CQ knowing they have truly opposite background. Yuwen Yu’s answer is that “there are words that does not need to be said and things that need to let go.” For me it could mean I don’t need to tell that I love her (CQ) and I don’t care if my status is opposite to her (CQ) For me it’s a plain statement that Zhuge Yu love CQ no matter what. Thank you for your blog it helped removed the angst and sadness I felt when The drama ended showing Zhuge Yu seems dying at Icy lake.

  13. Hey there,
For sure you should watch the drama and tell us the difference between the novel and the tv drama.
Both YX and YWY change throughout the course of the story due to the struggles of power in those times. It brought out the worst in YX but YWY grew into better man. However, I definitely feel sorry for YX. I am not even sure Xinger loves YX. I think she only sees him as a good friend. How else would you explain she jumped ship so quickly. I think Xinger is dissappointed in YX and YX actions made her realize she loves YWY.

    1. In the book, she was first grateful, became friends, fell in love, and then disappointment. It took years for her to jump ship. I don’t know how the drama did it, but she kept forgiving and giving YX several chances. Even when she didn’t think she could forgive him, she never left his side. It was really the fact that YX used her to get to ZGY, that really broke all of her hopes that maybe, just maybe, they could be together.

tho if they were going end it like this they should’ve given us more of CQxYY cause before they hit the half mark yaxun was already the main lead and yuwen yue had so little screen time that at some point i forgot he was the lead
was it like that in the book too?

    1. I could be wrong (it’s been a while), in the book YX had the same amount appearance at that time. ZGY (or YY) kept popping back in, since the author had to give a reason why CQ will be so upset about being used as bait. Also, CQ was often separated from YX. CQ did “grew up” with YX, so technically, they were together longer.

      1. Yuan Chun is the princess that was suppose to marry Yan Xun. She is the daughter of the Emperor. She was sentenced to death because she tried to kill her father, but she does not die because her brother had mercy on her and lets her go. I don’t think she is in the book. The movie adaptation is very different from the book. I only read the English translation up to chaper 37, but as far as I can tell it’s different.

        1. I don’t remember her name, but in the book, there was a princess that really like Yan Xun. At first, I felt sympathy for her, because she was raped by some of Yan Xun’s soldiers when she and her brother chased after Yan Xun after he rebelled. CQ rescued her, and personally delivered her back. However, she became quite a bitch later on….even more annoying than before.

          1. The princess is Yuan Chun or Zhao Chun’er the daughter of the emperor of Daxia from an imperial concubine, she is also the sister of Zhao Song or Yuan Song who also like Xinger. Chun’er is the princess that really like Yan Xun since they were just little children. She asked her father to marry her to YanXun, her father (the emperor) agreed but actually has a plan to use her as a pawn. The emperor’s plan is to kill Yan Xun on their wedding day. But YX and CQ planned ahead knowing the emperor will not let YX go to Yanbei with Chun’er. The Xiuli army helped YX escape from Changan or Daxia, Chun’er followed YX in the drama but at the time that she found YX and his troops she saw her brother tried to kill YX, YX in return cut off her brother’s right arm making him disable. YX told his people to escort the princess and her brother back to Changan before passing out. YX’s soldiers raped the princess on their way going back to Changan and CQ learned about it, CQ killed the rapist and escorted the princess and her brother herself back to Changan. Princess Chun’er realizes that YX, Yue and her brother all of them like CQ, she became jealous and blamed CQ for her misfortune and vowed to revenge on CQ someday. She is about to chop the head of CQ in a battle but YWY saved CQ on time while on mask and pushed Chun’er away from CQ and carried the unconscious CQ in a way where YX could easily find CQ.

              1. She just described what happened in the TV Drama. WOW! I guess based on what you wrote the TV Drama is pretty closed to the book. I figured the difference is the names and age of the characters (they are already grown up) and the fact that Chu Qiao did not come from the future but instead has a special inner power that makes her really powerful. (Chinese government prohibits time travel movies due to accidents that occurred to people trying to time travel). Unfortunately, Chu Qiao’s inner power is locked inside her body because she has lost her memory due to falling into a river and hitting her head. The TV Drama ended when Yuen Yue supposedly dies in the icy lake and the inner power that has been locked inside her body gets trigger because of the coldness of the water. I wish a kind soul will be able to finish translating the book because as far as I know season 2 might not happen at all and if it does it’s going to take a long time (years) to begin production because the original actors might no be available. I tried using Google translate and it was ridiculous how off the translation was. If you have time to spare you might want to watch the TV Drama, who knows maybe you’ll like it as much as many of us did, except for the ending.

                1. The reason I don’t want to watch the TV show is the same reason I don’t want to reread the book. It’s too much of an emotional ride. Especially now that I know everyone’s end, it’s even more painful reading about them being so carefree. The TV show doesn’t even have the payoff of a bittersweet ending to at least somewhat reimburse my many tears.

  16. I have a question about the book. In the TV Drama Yuwen Yue in order to protect Xing’er from his cuisin Yuwen Huai trying to kill her (choke her to dead) pretends to kill Xing’er by using some kind of needle to block her blood flow and later when they were away he was suppose to revive her but the emperor requests his immediate presence. Yuwen Yue then orders his bodyguard Yue Qi to take Xing’er home and wait for his orders. While in court with the emperor Yuwen Yue starts to worry because he only has a certain amount of time to revive her and if he exeeds the time she will die for real. Finally the emperor lets him go but not before punishing him by ordering him to go after he settles his affairs to the border of Wei State to become a soldier and protect the border. He runs back home to find that his grandfather has sent Xing’er to the graveyard to be burned with all the other corpses. When he gets there supposedly her body was already burned. He is totally devastated because he loved her so much but never showed her or told her of his love. Of course she does not die because Yan Xun’s subordinate Zhong Yu rescues her without being noticed right before they burn her and brings her back to life. I wanna know if this really happened in the book. I will really appreciate your reply. Thanks in advance.

    1. Yeah, I read about it too, frankly, I was quite disappointed in finding that out. This was one of my favorite Chinese novels. Now…I can’t look at it the same way.
